The site assessment visit at Roșia Montană concluded successfully

The site visit of the designated expert within the ICOMOS assessment of the nomination of the Roșia Montană Mining Landscape for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List has concluded successfully.
The mission in Romania of Dr. Helmuth Albrecht, Professor at the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (Technical Mining Academy in Freiberg), designated expert of ICOMOS for the assessment in situ of the Roșia Montană Mining Landscape, nominated by Romania for inscription on the World Heritage List, took place between September 25 and 29. ICOMOS – The International Council on Monuments and Sites – is an Advisory Body of the World Heritage Committee for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention of UNESCO.

The UNESCO World Heritage Centre confirmes the technical conformity of the nomination file

On March the 1st 2017 the Romanian Ministry of Culture and National Identity received an official letter from the director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre confirming that the Nomination of Rosia Montana Mining Landscape met all of the technical requirements outlined in the Operational Guidelines concerning completeness check of nominations to the World Heritage List. Therefore the file has been sent to ICOMOS for evaluation.
Roșia Montană Nominated for Inscription on UNESCO World Heritage List
January 4 2016
On January 4, 2017, the Romanian Ministry of Culture submitted the “Roșia Montană Mining Landscape” nomination document to UNESCO for inclusion on the World Heritage list. The Minister of Culture, Corina Șuteu, assumed responsibility for the submission, after informing and consulting with Prime Minister Dacian Cioloș, and with support from the Ministry of External Affairs.

CNMI approves submitting the nomination file

The National Commission of Historical Monuments (CNMI) has analysed the Roșia Montană Mining Landscape nomination file during it's session on the 29th of November and has approved the submission of the file.
Survey in the local community
December 26 2016
The National Institute for Heritage published the results of the survey that was carried out in the local community throughout November. The survey focused on UNESCO and on the possibility of including The Rosia Montana mining landscape in the World Heritage List. The results revealed that the vast majority of locals know what UNESCO is and what its roles are, and that (much too) many believe that Rosia Montana already is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The scientific part of the nomination file for Roșia Montană Mining Landscape in UNESCO World Heritage has been finalized. The inter-governmental procedures to submit the file for evaluation are currently ongoing. The representatives of the Ministry of Culture have submitted the nomination file to the Permanent Delegation of Romania to UNESCO, institution under the leadership of Ambassador Adrian Cioroianu. The deadline for the official submission of the nomination file to the UNESCO World Heritage Center is February 1st 2017.
