Five religious denominations and several ethnic groups have lived together in work and community life, a situation that is reflected in the current character of this Transylvanian mining settlement substantially frozen in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries at the inception of its prosperous urbanisation. The churches - orthodox, greek-catholic, catholic, reformed and unitarian - dominate the built environment and contribute substantially to the symbolic imagery of the settlement.
